EssexChelmsford

Chelmsford, authorised as a market town by King John in 1199, is Essex's county town. A large town, population about 156,000, with a light industrial base that makes it a busy regional centre.

The first radio factory was built here by Guglielmo Marconi in 1912.

There is a large cathedral that is well worth a visit, with 19th and 20th century stained glass windows. Guided tours available.. On Chelmsford Cathedral

Multi-screen cinema and theatres, leisure centre with pool, flume rides and ice rink.

The shopping area is now pedestrianised with two main shopping centres as well as the High Street.

Market day is Thursday with an antiques and second-hand market. Pleasant parks and walks along the river Can.

Two antique centres in the area, one at Battlesbridge (tel: 01268 575000 for details) on the A130 south of Colchester, the other at Great Baddow (tel: 01245 476159 for details), just south of the town.
