Great
Dunmow
|
|
|
Great Dunmow,
and it's near neighbour, Little Dunmow, is a small market
town close to Stansted Airport and the M11.
Once a
Roman settlement, it's main trade was wool which helped it
to grow to an important market centre. Today the town is a
traditional market town with historic buildings and shopping
in the High Street.
It is
well known for the Dunmow Flitch Trials, actually started
in Little Dunmow around 1120, held every four years, and married
couples, who can prove they have not quarrelled for a year
are given a side of bacon a "flitch".
