EssexSaffron Walden

Saffron Walden, a pretty market town with old buildings and antique shops. The town gets its name from the rare Crocus sativus, saffron crocus, once used as a medicine and in cooking. In the 18th century the town's main industry was malt for brewing.

Many of the historic buildings were built by Quakers, and survive today in this town, largely untouched by industrialisation. There are the remains of a small castle, and rather a good church.
