Western East SussexBrighton

Brighton, with its sister town Hove, where in the 18th century the holiday resort led the way to sea bathing. It became popular by the visits of the Prince of Wales, later George IV, in 1784, transforming the original village of Brighthelmstone. He kept his secret wife, Mrs Fitzherbert, here and commuted to London, as people do now.

The old Brighton town centre is preserved as The Lanes, small cottages in twisting lanes, brimming with antique shops, bookshops, and cafe's.

The Regency and Victorian buildings show its popularity over the years, and the town has kept its magnetism, being the scene of Sunday day trips from Mods and Rockers to today.

The town was immortalized by Graham Green in his book Brighton Rock.

Hotels, restaurant's, cafe's ands guest houses line the promenade above the beach.

Theatres, nightclubs, lively !, piers, including Palace Pier, marina, and a racecourse, Kemp Town, are all here, with shops running up the hills towards the railway station.

Hove is quieter, to the West along the coast.

Lots of tourist attractions to see and things do in the town and the surrounding area, with the South Downs, , but it does get busy. Tourist Information Centre.

Take the Volks railway, electric, along the sea front, from the pier it goes west towards Rottingdean past the marina.
