Hastings
|
|
| Hastings,
it all happened here in 1066, or didn't as the actual battle
was 6 miles inland at Battle, A21 north then A2100. But there
are still reminders here, and you can see the ruined Norman
castle on the cliff top next to where William the Conqueror's
more modest 1086 affair.
Hasting's was a Cinque
Port, part of Henry VIII's "build me ships and I'll let
you raise taxes" deal.
Today Hastings is
a seaside resort which was started in the 19th century, but
still has it's old town between East and West hills, east
of the modern centre, with medieval buildings and churches.
The old harbour has wooden buildings around it.
It has 5 miles of
shingle beaches below the cliffs, and the modern amenities
usually found in seaside resorts. Take the cliff railway to
get down the cliffs to the beach.
The urban area run's
into St Leonards to the west, the resort is known as Hastings
and St Leonard's.
