Lewes, the county town, on a hill next to the River Ouse, with a 1000 years of history in its streets and buildings.
With the Norman keep on the top of the hill, good views, the barbican and gatehouse are below.
A busy town, with 18th century houses in the High Street and Keere Street. There are three interesting churches, St Michael's with its round tower, St Anne's with a Norman font, whilst the part Norman St John's has an engraved stone over the grave of one of William the Conqueror's daughters.
Quite a few antique and craft shops here.
John Everlyn, the 17th century diarist, attended the local grammar school, whilst Tom Paine, author of The Rights Of Man, lived in Bull House, a half timbered building.
Henry II was defeated in the Battle of Lewis by Simon de Montford and his baron army in 1264.
