Eastern East SussexRye

Rye, one of the Cinque Ports, part of Henry VIII's "build me ships and you can raise taxes" deal. As a result the town was burn down by the French in 1377.

The town, built on a hill, was once on the coast, but not any more as the tides and winds changed that in the 16th century. The River Tillingham nearly surrounds the town.

A charming English coastal town, full of antique shops, book shops, and crafts, Rye is a popular place to visit.

It retains it's past with medieval remains of the town walls, Landgate is 14th century, narrow cobbled streets and old buildings. These include the famous Mermaid Inn, in Mermaid Street, once used by the Hawkhurst gang of smugglers, and it has a secret stairway behind a bookcase in Dr Syn's bedroom. Russell Torndyke wrote Dr Syn.

Norman church, St Mary's with its Quarter Boys that strike the time every quarter of an hour, and a ruined castle add to the atmosphere.

Literary connections as well, Henry James lived in Lamb House from 1898 to 1916, as did E.F.Benson, famous for the Mapp and Lucia novels.

Tourist Information centre in the town.

After the museums and a wander, walk down to the harbour at the estuary, with its nature reserve. For a good beach, east to Camber Sands or try Winchelsea just west.
