The lovely seaside village of Aberdour has a picturesque fishing harbour and one of the best beaches on the Firth of Forth, and has been a popular visitor destination for generations.
Aberdour Castle is in the centre of the town, a sprawling and partially ruined complex of buildings which were developed from the 12th to the 17th centuries by several families. It boasts a Norman church and pretty stone doo(dove)cot.
Aberdour looks out over the water to the dramatic island of Inchcolm, site of a lonely ruined abbey dating back to the 13th century, earning it the title of the Iona of the East. To reach the abbey you will need to first travel across the Firth of Forth to South Queensferry for the short boat trip to the island.
