Kinghorn is an attractive harbour town on the Firth of Forth, one of many picturesque fishing settlements which make the coastline of the Kingdom of Fife such a popular tourist destination.
Pretty stone and whitewashed buildings lead down to the fishing boats in the harbour and sandy beach. This unassuming place was once the site of an important castle frequented by Scottish Royalty. King Alexander III tragically fell to his death on the cliffs here in the 13th century. Without a clear heir, the kingdom was thrown into crisis which resulted in the medieval wars of independence with England.
Bringing Kinghorn into the 21st century is the Sustainable Communities Initiative's Earthship visitor centre, set on the shores of Kinghorn Loch. This demonstrates eco-friendly living in a building made from natural and recycled materials and designed to be as sustainable as possible.
