Just north of St Andrews lies the small traditional town of Leuchars. It has some quaint buildings and a wonderful parish church, which dates back in parts to the 12th century.
However, the town is best known for the presence of historic RAF Leuchars, which is the oldest continuously used airfield in Britain - dating back to 1911 when the area was home to a balloon squadron.
In September it hosts a hugely popular annual airshow which draws visitors from far and wide. With exhibitions of aircraft on the ground and jaw dropping aerial displays, it features flypasts from Spitfire, Lancaster Bomber and Vulcan, right through to the modern Tornados and Typhoons that operate from the RAF base today. The Red Arrows are always one of the most popular attractions, performing each year to a crowd of many thousands.
