Holywell is a charming and traditional Welsh market town, named after the sacred well of St Winefride which has been a place of Christian pilgrimage since the 7th century.
A beautiful 16th century shrine chapel encloses the natural spring-fed pool, which is said to have first flowed when Winefride was miraculously restored to life. Modern-day pilgrims still bathe in the waters.
The town is surrounded by pleasant green countryside great for walking, such as along the scenic Wat's Dyke Way trail and the newly created Pilgrim's Way which runs all the way along the north coast to sacred Bardsey Island. Don't miss the Greenfield Valley Heritage Park, containing historic industrial buildings, a museum and 12th century Basingwerk Abbey in tranquil parkland.
