Painswick
Rococo Garden is a unique 18th century garden that for
centuries was hidden beneath trees and brambles.
For the past 10 years the 6 acre
garden, in a steep Cotswold valley, has been under restoration
by the Painswick Rococo Garden Trust, using a painting of
the garden by Thomas Robins (dated 1748) as a guide.
The relaxed and informal Rococo
style of gardening became fashionable after the formality
of Italianate and French gardens.
The original 18th century garden
buildings have been carefully refurbished. These include
the Eagle House, the brilliant white Gothic 'exedra' or meeting-house,
temples, alcoves and sculptures.
These delightful buildings are
juxtaposed with winding woodland walks and formal vistas.
An "Anniversary" maze has been planted.
There are several water features
including a fish pond and plunge pool. The steep site has
a profusion of wild flowers and the garden is famous for its
magnificent display of snowdrops in early spring.
Restaurant and shop.
