Rodmarton
Manor was one of the last great country houses to be built
in the country.
It was designed by Ernest Barnsley
and Claud Biddulph at the beginning of the 20th century.
The house was built in the traditional way and is a wonderful
monument to the work of the Arts and Crafts movement.
Rodmarton still contains some
of the furniture, ironwork, china and needlework made especially
for the house.
The house has a beautiful setting
with views across to Marlborough. The large garden surrounding
the house was also designed by Ernest Barnsley. He created
a series of 'outdoor rooms' divided by Cotswold dry-stone
walls and fine hedges.
Features include splendid herbaceous
borders (some with giant topiary chairs!), a rock garden,
old and new roses, rare plants and an eye-catching summerhouse.
There is also a kitchen garden
and an unusual trough garden which uses old farm troughs as
containers for alpines. The topiary throughout the garden
reflects the symmetry of the house.
The formal gardens merge into
a woodland garden which blends beautifully with the perfect
surroundings.
