Westonbirt Arboretum
covers 600 acres and is considered to be the most comprehensive
collection of trees and shrubs in Europe.
The arboretum was begun in 1829
by Robert Holford at a time when keen plant collectors were
bringing back new specimens from all over the world. Today
there are 18,000 catalogued trees.
The arboretum is open daily throughout
the year and is beautiful in every season. In the spring
there are camellias, magnolias and acers and a marvellous
display of bluebells in the silk wood. Foliage colour is
superb in the autumn and winter walks here are wonderful.
Stop off at the visitors' centre first to obtain information
and collect an essential map of the vast arboretum!
There is also a renowned nursery at Westonbirt Arboretum.
Summer concerts and other events.
