These gardens are a memorial to Dorothy Clive who lived here from the time of her marriage in 1907 until her early death in 1942. Dorothy's husband, Colonel Clive, began the garden so that she could enjoy walks around their property.
Today the famous gardens named in her memory have a wide range of choice and unusual plants that provide interest throughout the year.
The gravelly soil and lack of lime is perfect for the huge collections of rhododendrons, azaleas and magnolias, underplanted with drifts of spring bulbs and the massed plantings of heathers.
Features include a quarry with a spectacular waterfall, flower borders and a scree and water garden. In the summer there are herbaceous plants, ornamental grasses, masses of roses and pool-side bog plants. In the autumn there is stunning foliage colour.
A booklet guides the visitor around the various walks and provides invaluable plant information.
