Houghton Lodge is a charming
white-painted gothic house set in spacious and peaceful gardens overlooking the River
Test. The house is a rare 18th century example
of 'Cottage Ornee'. In the delightful garden lawns sweep down to the river and
there elsewhere there is topiary, a traditional walled garden and ancient fruit
trees.
The well-stocked greenhouses contrast
with the Hydroponicum. Here a fascinating demonstration
shows the visitor how plants can be grown without soil and
how to control pests without chemicals. Hydroponic
kits are for sale.
