The cottage-style garden at Stoneacre
has developed over the centuries around a timber-framed yeoman's house dating mainly from
1480. This beautiful building (also open to
the public) is now owned by the National Trust and contains a great hall with a crownpost
roof.
At the entrance is a ginko tree
and from here a stone path, edged with grape hyacinths and
'Alchemilla mollis', leads to the house. A summer border
has hotter colours and the delightful herb garden is surrounded
by low box hedging. A highlight of the garden is the
rare tree, 'Staphylea colchica', which has fragrant blossom.
At the rear of the house is a terraced courtyard which
makes an ideal spot to sit and admire the surrounding countryside over the apple
orchard. The garden is at its best in the spring and autumn. more
