| Shrubland Park is one of the finest examples
of an Italianate garden in England. The
Victorian garden was designed by Sir Charles Barry, architect of the Houses of Parliament,
and later on William Robinson advised on the planting.
Today this important garden is being restored by Lord and
Lady de Saumarez. The highlight of the garden is the superb Italian staircase which
descends from the top terrace to the formal gardens below.
Other features include a Swiss chalet, a loggia, follies
and a splendid box maze. Beyond the formal garden is a wild garden which leads to
the park. Here there are many fine trees, including some extremely old
specimens. |
