Borde Hill is a large informal garden set in 200 acres of beautiful parkland and woods.
Many of the great planthunters from the Himalayas brought back seeds and plants that still flourish in this renowned botanical garden. These include the superb collections of rhododendrons and magnolias which give a wonderful display of colour in late spring.
Colonel Stephenson Clarke, the owner of the garden, subscribed to many of these plant-hunting expeditions and raised 'Donation', a famous camellia, at Borde Hill.
Near the house (not open to the public) the gardens are more formal and a walled garden shelters rare Japanese and Chinese plants. The extensive new planting at Borde Hill includes a rose garden and herbaceous garden that provide summer colour. In the autumn there are crocuses and the shrubs provide spectacular foliage colour.
Colonel Stephenson Clarke's great-grandson Mr A. Stephenson Clark and his family now live at Borde Hill.
They are committed to returning the garden to its former glory and have introduced many features and events to fund the restoration.
