The grand Edwardian gardens at West Dean surround an early 18th century house designed by James Wyatt (now a college of arts and crafts).

The gardens are currently undergoing an energetic programme of restoration.

Magnificent old cedars tower over the lawns and tall conifers and horse chestnuts and oaks add dignity to the grounds. The gardens include 35 acres of ornamental grounds, a 100 yard pergola and herbaceous borders.

The pergola, probably the most impressive feature at West Dean, was designed by Harold Peto.

This leads to a pavilion which is covered with roses, honeysuckle and clematis.

The restored walled kitchen garden contains 13 glasshouses dating from the 1890s. These shelter figs, melons, peaches, ferns and tender plants. Espaliered fruit trees grow around the warm walls.

here is also a Park Walk, of just over two miles, which leads the visitor through glorious parkland and the 45 acre St Roche's Arboretum.
