Scotland's largest city, Glasgow is a vibrant, buzzing place, known for its excellent shopping, fashionable bars and world-class cultural activities.
Once thought of as gritty and run-down, Glasgow's post-industrial renaissance can probably be traced back to its designation as European City of Culture in 1990. This was a major success building on years of regeneration, particularly in the arts, which saw the creation of major galleries and venues putting the revitalised city firmly on the cultural map.
Glasgow was also named UNESCO City of Music in 2008 for its thriving and diverse music scene and will also hosts the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Some of the most impressive architectural and cultural attractions include the recently renovated Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, housed in a magnificent Edwardian building. The Burrell Collection comprises over 8,000 items displayed within the Pollok country estate. Set in a beautiful 18th century building but bringing the arts right up to date is the GoMA (Gallery of Modern Art).
The fascinating history of Glasgow can be discovered at a number of other museums and sites. The oldest house in Glasgow is known as Provand's Lordship which dates from 1471, and along with the People's Palace and Winter Gardens museum, gives a flavour of life for Glaswegians in past times. St Mungo's museum, Glasgow Cathedral and the Necropolis cemetery with its amazing mausoleums are also popular destinations.
One of Glasgow's most notable sons was the architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) working in an elegant sytle that influenced the Art-Nouveau movement. Buildings designed by Mackintosh in Glasgow include the Scotland Street School, now a museum of education, and many of his works can be seen in the City such as at Glasgow University's Hunterian Art Gallery.
To relax after a spot of sightseeing, head to Merchant City for its chic bars, shops, restaurants and cafes For even more retail therapy, visit the main shopping streets of Argyle Street, Buchanan Street and Sauchiehall Street or shopping centres such as Buchanan Galleries, St Enoch Centre and the stylish Princes Square - a destination in their own right.
