GloucestershireCirencester

Known as the 'Capital of the Cotswolds', the busy market town of Cirencester dates back to Roman times.  Then known as 'Corinium Dobunnorum', it was one the of regional capitals of Roman Britain.

Relatively little of the Roman town remains above ground but a large grassed over amphitheatre is worth a visit.

The award-winning visitor attraction, the Corinium Museum, illustrates the facinating history of Cirencester.

The town centre is dominated by the large parish church of St John Baptist, one of the finest Cotswold wool churches and known as the 'Cathedral of the Cotswolds'.  Its unique three-storied porch housed the Town Hall until 1897.

The town's colourful street market is still held twice a week in the large and impressive Market Place.

Cirencester offers a range of excellent shops and is now also an important crafts centre. The Brewery Arts Centre hosts workshops, a gallery and regular craft fairs.

Cirencester's many open spaces include the Abbey Grounds, site of St Mary's Abbey, and the extensive 18th century parkland of Cirencester Park, home to the Bathurst family for over 300 years.

Cirencester Park, which comes right into the heart of the town, plays host to a number of equestrian events including polo, held here every Sunday throughout the summer.

Nearby tourist attractions include the Westonbirt Arboretum at Tetbury, the Cotswolds Wildlife Park in Burford and the Cotswolds Water Park and Keynes Country Park at Shorncote.

The Kemble Airfield, on the A429 to the south of the town, houses the Bristol Aero Collection and is used for track days.
