GloucestershireLydney

Situated on the east of the Forest of Dean, Lydney was once an important Roman settlement.

In 1929 JRR Tolkien worked on the excavation of a Roman temple at Lydney Park.  The archaeological dig, run by Sir Mortimer Wheeler, examined Dwarf's Hill, an area riddled with tunnels and open cast mines, said to be inhabited by dwarves and hobgoblins.

Tolkien, who was working on The Hobbit at the time, is said have been inspired by this strange landscape and its folk lore when creating Hobbiton and the Shire.  The site of the Roman temple can be visited at Lydney Park Spring Gardens, to the southwest of the town. The gardens are also known for their spectacular display of rhododendrons and azaleas in May.

The Dean Forest Railway runs from Norchard Station in Lydney.
