GloucestershireMoreton-in-Marsh

The ancient town of Moreton-in-Marsh, lying on the northern edge of the Cotswolds, dates from Saxon times.

One of the most popular towns in the Cotswolds for holidaymakers and tourists to visit.

In the 13th century it was planned as a market town with a long and wide High Street.  Every Tuesday the largest open-air market in the Cotswolds is still held here.

At one time Moreton was an important linen weaving centre and its location at the crossing of the Roman Fosse Way and the London to Worcester road meant that it also developed as a coaching town.

The town has splendid buildings including the Curfew Tower, which has its original 17th century clock and bell.

A small friendly town, Moreton has a good range of shops, restaurants and hotels.

To the east of the town the Four Shire Stone has marked the old meeting place of Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Oxfordshire for 12 centuries. At the annual Moreton Show the four counties still meet together to celebrate past and present farming life.

The former RAF Moreton-in-Marsh is now the Fire Service College, the world's premier fire related training establishment.

Nearby visit Batsford Park, with the splendid Batsford Arboretum and the Cotswolds Falconry Centre.

At Blokely is the beautiful Mill Dene Garden, an unusual water-mill garden with steep terraces.
