Tetbury

|
|
This
ancient hill-top town, dating from the 7th century, originated
as a pre-historic hill fort. Like many Cotswolds towns, Tetbury
grew to importance with the medieval wool trade.
The town
is still dominated by the magnificent Market House, dating
from 1655. Supported on three rows of bulging stone pillars,
this splendid building was designed for the sale of wool and
yarn and still hosts a market today.
Tetbury
is known as an 'architectural gem' and was designated an outstanding
conservation area in 1971. Many of its wool merchants houses
still look as they did 300 years ago, and still worth the
visitors time to take a look.
In Gumstool
Hill. further down hill, many 17th century weavers cottages
have survived. This area is the site of the annual Woolsack
Races, a test of strenth in which contestants carry 60lb woolsacks
up and down a 1 in 4 hill.
Tetbury
is a flourishing antiques centre, with many antique shops
to visit in the bottom half of Long Street, Tetbury's finest
thoroughfare.
Visit
the Victorian police station which now houses the Tetbury
Police Museum.
Tetbury
is closely associated with the Royal Family. Located nearby
are Gatcoombe Park, the home of HRH Princess Anne, and Highgrove,
the country home of HRH Prince of Wales.
Other
visitor attractions near to Tetbury include Westonbirt,
The National Arboretum and the beautiful gardens of Trull
House.
