Saumarez
Park Route de Saumarez, Castel |
| |
|
The house and grounds were originally
the private residence of the de Saumarez family. James
St Vincent de Saumarez, the 4th Peer, acquired the estate
in the 19th century. He enlarged the house and created
gardens. In 1938 the whole property was purchased by
the State of Guernsey.
The house is now a residential
home for the elderly and the stable block houses the National
Trust of Guernsey's Folk Museum. Parts of the estate
still maintain their original layout, including the Rose Garden.
Since 1993 the fountains and formal gardens have been restored.
The park hosts events and shows.
Open daily. Free admission.

Cambridge
Park Amherst, St Peter Port |
| |
|
Cambridge Park lies adjacent
to the Beau Sejour Centre. Once used as a military
parade ground, the park consists of large areas used for sport.
The park has a pedestrian avenue lined with mature trees.
Dedicated to Sir Winston Churchill, the avenue is at its best
in the spring when it is carpeted by crocus flowers.
However, the avenue was the site of the last duel to be fought
on the island!

Candie
Gardens St Peter Port |
| |
|
Once part of a private estate,
the Candie Gardens are St Peter Port's finest floral attraction.
The site has the Upper and Lower Gardens, the Guernsey Museum
and Art Gallery, based on the Victorian bandstand that once
stood here, and the Priaulx Library, named after the former
owners of the house it occupies.
Established in 1894, the gardens
are on a hill overlooking St Peter Port and have spectacular
views over the rooftops to the neighbouring islands.
Fatures include the oldest known
heated glass-houses in the British Isles, late-18th century,
and a statue of the French literary hero, Victor Hugo. The
writer was exiled in Guernsey from 1855 to 1870, and was presented
to Guernsey by the people of France and unveiled in 1914.
Open daily. Free admission.
