The small and pleasant University city of Bangor is found on the north coast of Wales, just across the water from the Isle of Anglesey and close to the scenic beauty of Snowdonia.
A good base from which to explore the scenic beauty of North Wales, Bangor is a busy and cosmopolitan place, with plenty of shops, bars, pubs and restaurants.
For rainy days, the Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery has extensive collections on local history and Welsh life. Just outside town is the splendid Penrhyn Castle, a wonderful mock-Norman mansion built in the 19th century by a local wealthy slate quarrying family and now owned by the National Trust. Between Bangor and Caernarfon is Greenwood Forest Park with its huge range of adventure activities for children.
Bangor also has its own traditional Victorian seaside pier, stretching out into the Menai Strait towards the Isle of Anglesey. Visitors can make the short journey across to this attractive island on the nearby Menai Suspension Bridge designed by Thomas Telford, or via Robert Stephenson's Britannia Tubular Bridge, both triumphs of 19th century engineering.
