Famed for its splendid and imposing castle, the Royal town of Caernarfon is a busy port popular with visitors.
The castle is situated in an ideal defensive position at the mouth of the River Seiont overlooking the Menai strait and Isle of Anglesey. This impressive fortress dominates the town, and built by Edward I of England in the 13th century as his Royal seat, it was designed to show his power of the Welsh. Just out of town is another historic site, Segontium Roman Fort dating from 77AD.
Caernarfon itself is a bustling and attractive market town, with historic buildings in characterful streets winding round the ancient city walls, and lovely walks alongside the river and marina. With plenty of amenities it is ideal as a base to explore the attractions of North Wales and Snowdonia National Park.
One of the best ways to enjoy the scenery is by steam train. The Welsh Highland Railway travels south from Caernarfon to Porthmadog, offering a leisurely trip through the unspoilt countryside of Snowdonia.
