The harbour of Porthmadog is a busy town with great coastal and estuarine scenery, set against a backdrop of stunning craggy north Wales hills and mountains.
The town is a pleasant place to stroll and watch the boats, with lots of individual shops, cafes and things to do. By the harbour is the Maritime Museum, where you can discover more about the towns links with the sea. Porthmadog also has not one but two great historic railways, the Ffestiniog Railway and Welsh Highland Heritage Railways, located at opposite ends of the town.
Just to the west of Porthmadog near the village of Morfa Bychan is the spectacular windswept beach of Black Rock Sands, a 2 mile stretch of golden sand and dunes. Close by is the spectacular Italianate village of Portmeirion.
