Eccentric and fabulous Portmeirion is an amazing private village created by the architect Clough Williams-Ellis from 1925 to 1976.
With individual eclectic buildings cascading down to a beautiful and tranquil harbour and beach, it is at once strange and beautiful. Some of the buildings are examples of arts and craft architecture, others Palladian, and the village feels distinctly Mediterranean.
This odd toytown atmosphere attracted the creators of the The Prisoner who filmed the cult TV series starring Patrick McGoohan here in the 1960s. The building used as the location of the Prisoner's house is now a shop called Number Six selling memorabilia from the series.
