|
Bishop's Stortford
is to the east of the
county on the border between Hertfordshire and Essex.
An ancient market town, Bishop's
Stortford also thrived as a staging post on the mail coach
routes between London and both Newmarket and Cambridge.
The town's prosperity increased
with the opening of the River Stort to navigation in 1769
and was further enhanced by the opening of the railway line
to London in the middle of the 19th century.
Today the market town is a favoured
commuter area for the City of London. The town's many
hotels and guest houses cater not only for the tourist trade
but also for those flying in and out of nearby Stanstead
Airport over in Essex.
The fine market town has many
historic buildings including the remains of a Norman castle
and several 16th and 17th century inns. Street markets are
still held on Thursday and Saturdays.
Despite its growth Bishop's Stortford
has retained over 90 acres of parks and open spaces and the
'Green Belt' has prevented excessive urbanisation.
The surrounding countryside has
many attractive villages and as well as walking in the countryside,
visitors can enjoy trips to nearby Hatfield Forest, a country
park owned by the National Trust.

on the Hill Museum Adventure, Stansted Mountfitchet over
the border in Essex, CM24 8SP, north on B1383. From Thaxted
take the B1051 west. Three museums in one place, has to be the
largest toy museum in the world, plus a rock n'roll, film and
theatre museum as well as amusement machines from the end-of-the-pier.
