LetchworthLetchworth

Letchworth, to the north of Hertfordshire, is famous as the world's first 'Garden City'.

The town was the vision of Ebenezer Howard, one of the world's great social reformers.  He believed that the problems of overcrowding, poor living conditions and pollution could be solved by combining aspects of the town and country.

This concept was finally realised in 1899 by the founding of the Garden City Movement and the construction Letchworth Garden City in 1903.  The two original architects of the town were Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin.

In 1920 Ebenezer Howard left Letchworth to create his second garden city at Welwyn Garden City.  The First Garden City Museum near the town centre has details the history of Letchworth and more information on the town can be found at the Letchworth Museum and Art Gallery.

Today the town's balance of attractive residential, shopping and industrial areas represents many of the ideals that Ebenezer Howard strived for.

Standalone Farm, a delightful 170 acre model farm, owned and managed by Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, is located in Wilbury Road on the outskirts of the town.
