Near the beautiful River Eden, in the ancient town of Appleby in Westmorland, this traditional 17th century coaching inn offers free Wi-Fi and recently refurbished en suite rooms. The Royal Oak Appleby is rated as a 4-star inn by VisitBritain, the tourist board of the United Kingdom.

Fully refurbished during 2008 and early 2009, all of the rooms have high-quality beds and en suite bathrooms. Each room has a flat-screen TV with Freeview digital channels and iPod docking stations. Many rooms have free Wi-Fi. There is also a charming 2-bedroom stone-built cottage for those who prefer the convenience of self-catering accommodation.

The inn offers real cask ales and the very popular restaurant serves good quality pub food, made using the finest ingredients from local suppliers. The inn makes a great base from which to explore the Pennine Way, the Lake District or the Settle-Carlisle railway.

Appleby Railway Station is just a few hundred metres away.

Dining & Bar

The Royal Oak has a 60-seater restaurant and a 40-seater lounge where you can dine in front of a roaring fire. The Tap Room bar can hold up to 30 people and dogs are welcome. Award-winning cask ales are available in the restaurant, the lounge and the Tap Room bar. The inn has received Cask Marque certification and achieved a beautiful beer Gold Award in 2009.

Getting To The Royal Oak Appleby

The hotel is situated on the A66, 13 miles from Penrith (junction 40 on the M6), and 24 miles from Scotch Corner on the A1. North West travelling visitors should leave the M6 at junction 38 and travel through Tebay/Orton onto Appleby, approximately a 10 m inute journey.
Appleby has it own railway station on the Carlisle to Settle line and is about half a mile from the Royal Oak.

Area Information

Appleby is situated in the heart of the Eden Valley, only 18 miles from Ullswater, and 25 miles from Lake Windermere. The historic border city of Carlisle is only 30 miles away, as is Kendal, a major Lakes tourist destination. Appleby boasts a 10th century castle and is only a 10 minute drive from Centre Parcs. Only one minute off the A66, the hotel is the ideal half-way stopping point between the A1/M1 (Scotch Corner) and Scotland.

Important Information

Well behaved dogs are welcome in the hotel rooms (2 of which lead direct out onto the garden) at a charge of 12.50 GBP per night per dog. Dogs are not allowed in the lounge bar or restaurants, however, pets can visit our Tap Room bar.
This hotel does not accept American Express.
Children are welcome in all areas.
As the Royal Oak is a 17th century building, we are unable to offer any facilities for the disabled.
