Hardwick Old Hall, the family seat of the Earls of Shrewsbury, was finished in 1591. The building was enlarged Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury (Bess of Hardwick) and the ruins still show her innovative planning and some decorative plasterwork.
Bess of Harwick began work on the new Hardwick Hall, her 'prodigy house', in 1591after the death of the Earl of Shrewsbury (her fourth husband) when she was 70 years old.
Following the completion of the new building in 1597, Hardwick Old Hall was abandoned.
This large ruined building is now in the care of English Heritage. It is possible to climb to the top of Hardwick Old Hall and from here there are spectacular views over the country park and towards the 'New' Hall.
