| 7 miles south-west of Grantham between A52 Grantham - Nottingham and A607 Grantham - Melton Home of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland, the castle has a good view over the Vale of Belvoir. Robert de Todeni built the first fortress. In 1655 a new house designed by John Webb was built and in 1801 it was remodelled in a castellated style. In 1813 the north and west ranges were destroyed by fire and pictures and furniture were lost. The Duke's chaplain was entrusted with the rebuilding work. Paintings include works by Poussin and Gainsborough. The gardens include The Statue Gardens, built into the hillside below the castle. more information |
| Near Lutterworth, 1 mile south of B5414 Rugby - Market Harborough road, 7.5 miles north-east of Rugby A William and Mary house, the home of the Cave family, ancestors of the present owner, since 1430. In 1697 Sir Roger Cave engaged William Smith of Warwick to build the present house. In the 19th century the house was neglected but in 1880 it was repaired and remodelled. The Library contains over 5,000 books and manuscripts, dating from 1150. Surrounded by parkland. The stables house a display of motor cycles and a replica of an early flying machine. more information |
