The Merchant Adventurers' Hall is the finest medieval guildhall in Europe.

This splendid building was erected in 1357 - 62 for the Guild of Merchant Adventurers and has remained virtually unaltered since that time.

The Merchants used the first floor of the building to transact their business, as their successors do today.

The ground floor housed their hospice, where they cared for the poor. Also on the ground floor was the chapel and its survival to the present day is unique in England.

The Merchant Adventurers' Hall is now a museum and contains a fine collection of furniture, early portraits, silver and other fascinating objects used by the Merchants over the centuries.

The wealth and influence of the Merchants helped to increase the importance of the city. At one time York was the second city in England after London. Unique.
