Mount Grace Priory, founded in 1398, is the best preserved Carthusian monastery in England.
The building lies in the secluded wooded countryside at the foot of the Cleveland Hill in one of the loveliest settings of any English priory.
Each monk lived as a hermit in his own two-storey cell. One of these cells has been restored and contains hand carved replica beds, cabinets and chests. This cell gives an good idea of the Carthusian monks' austere life of work and prayer. There are also remnants of the Priory's cloister, church and outer court.
Entry is through the manor house built on the site of the monastery guest house by Thomas Lascelles in 1654. At the turn of the 20th century this building was rebuilt using the traditional techniques employed by the Arts and Crafts movement.
Owned by the National Trust, managed and maintained by English Heritage. The grounds provide a beautiful picnic spot.
