The historic port of Greenock has a notable heritage of fishing, shipbuilding and seafaring, and was once a thriving trading centre with the Americas. Today cargo and passengers are still brought from the Clyde here at the Ocean Terminal, which can be viewed by a stroll along the attractive waterside esplanade.
The prosperity this trade brought to the town is evidenced today in its fine houses and imposing civic architecture. The splendid 19th century Municipal Buildings are dominated by the Victoria Tower, standing 75m tall and larger than the civic buildings of nearby Glasgow.
The McLean Museum and Art Gallery was established in Greenock in 1867 and its collections cover a huge range of topics from ancient history through the maritime heyday of the Inverclyde area and its natural environment. The Old Customs House on the quayside is an elegant neoclassical building still used today and also houses a small museum.
Along the coast to the east is the Finlaystone Country Estate, an outdoor attraction with gardens, woodland walks and play areas for children.
