Like many resorts in this part of Scotland, Wemyss Bay owed its growth to the Victorian tourist industry in the railway age. The town is still a popular seaside destination and the gateway to ferry services serving the Isle of Bute.
However, no other town in the area retains such a beautiful legacy of this mass transportation. The railway station and pier are a triumph of Edwardian architecture, with an elegant iron and glass structure in a graceful sweeping design. The Friends of Wemyss Bay Station help to maintain this magnificent structure, and run a small gallery and bookshop on the site.
