Capital of the Isle of Man, Douglas is the largest town and the main ferry port.
Douglas grew up as a harbour, built on fishing and sea trading. In the 19th century it became a fashionable tourist destination, and its fine Victorian buildings are a legacy of this era. The seafront promenade runs for 2 miles along the sandy beach, lined with elegant white buildings and grand hotels, and best seen from the unique horse-drawn trams.
Many of the quality cultural attractions in Douglas were established in the 19th and early 20th century. These include the refurbished Villa Marina and Gardens complex, Broadway Cinema, and the splendid Gaiety Theatre. There is also a working camera obscura on the cliffs above the lighthouse on Douglas Head. The town is also a popular centre for shopping and relaxing, with high-street stores, cafes, pubs and eating places.
The harbour is still busy with boats and yachts along the quayside, while the ferries and larger boats dock at the pier. Out in the bay is the landmark of the Tower of Refuge, a 19th century structure built to resemble a castle on the treacherous island reef, designed to keep any shipwreck survivors safe until rescued.
