Visit the Isle of Man
The Isle of Man is a scenic and historic island in the Irish Sea between England, Scotland and Northern Island.
With strong Celtic and Viking influences, its own language (Manx Gaelic), folklore, government and coinage, the island has a long history and distinct cultural identity. It is not part of the United Kingdom but a Crown Dependency with its own parliament, the ancient Tynwald, founded in 979AD. The unique character of the Isle of Man can also be seen in some of its iconic imagery, notably the three-legged triskelion symbol that appears on flags and coins. The tailless Manx cat is another popular emblem of the island.
The harbour town of Douglas is the capital, with regular ferry and catamaran services to Liverpool, Belfast, Dublin and other UK ports, the quickest crossing being 2 and a half hours. Ronaldsway airport, close to historic Castletown, connects the island with London and other UK and European destinations.
On the island tourist attractions include taking a trip on the unique tram and steam railways.
The island is rich in prehistoric monuments, magnificent castles and other heritage sites such as the enormous Great Laxey waterwheel. There are picturesque coastal towns and fishing villages and breathtaking unspoilt natural scenery, especially the cliffs and beaches. Watch for dolphins, whales and basking sharks.
The Isle of Man Tourist Trophy ('TT') motorcycle race has brought international fame to the island in more recent times, a hair-raising high speed time trial through the narrow island roads.
