Visit the Isle of Wight
Just 2 miles of the coast of England is its largest island, the beautiful Isle of Wight. With an exceptionally mild climate and outstanding scenery, it has long been a favourite tourist destination.
A short journey from Southampton, Portsmouth or Lymington on the English mainland, the trip across the Solent can take as little as 22 minutes by Catamaran. Explore the beautiful coastline of chalky white cliffs, the dramatic rock formations of the needles, famous multicoloured sands at Alum bay and the peaceful rural countryside.
The beautiful beaches are also one of the best places in Europe to hunt for fossils, some dating back 125 million years. The Isle of Wight has become known as Dinosaur island, with 15 species known to have lived here, and there are many fossil shops and attractions which explain the rich geology and palaeontology of the island.
For many, The Isle of Wight is synonymous with excellent sailing. The world famous sailing regatta of Cowes week takes place in August, and has been a sporting fixture since 1826.
The island has a long history and a wealth of quaint villages and heritage attractions. Arguably the most magnificent is Osborne House, the seaside palace beloved of Queen Victoria, but there are also castles, historic houses and Roman villas.
