Capital of the Isle of Wight, Newport is a fine county town with a long history.
In the centre of the island on the River Medina, Newport was a thriving port, and the interesting riverside area includes the Quay Arts centre, the leading cultural venue on the island. Alongside the boats at Newport harbour are warehouse style apartments also a bus museum.
This large town is great for shopping, with all the high street names and individual stores, restaurants, pubs, cafes and bars. The historic streets are lined with attractive old buildings, such as the Georgian Guildhall, which also houses the Museum of Island History.
Newport has existed since at least Roman times, and a farmhouse dating from around 280AD was found on the outskirts of the town, now partially reconstructed. The nearby Robin Hill Adventure Park also has a Roman Villa within its grounds. You can trace the rich history of the area through other heritage attractions, such as splendid Carisbrooke Castle, where King Charles I was imprisoned by Oliver Cromwell, and the nearby Shipwreck Centre and Maritime Museum.
