Ryde is a large seaside town on the north east coast of the island, just a short journey across the water from Portsmouth.
With its long pier, promenade and elegant buildings, Ryde still has a Victorian character reminding visitors that the town grew up as a seaside resort in the 19th century - as the population followed their Queen's lead to holiday on the island. Its wide golden sandy beach is still very popular, especially for families, and there are a wide range of individual shops, excellent cafes, restaurants and pubs.
Ryde is also notable for its popular carnivals, which have been held since the 1880s when Queen Victoria herself attended. Today there are five annual events, including a main carnival attracting many thousands, as well as illuminated processions and an arts festival.
