New Romney, is just inland, on the Romney Marsh with small villages around it. The town was once a Cinque Port until the river course changed after some storms.

It was an important centre with five churches, only the Norman St Nicholas survives.

Romney Marsh was a smugglers haunt, and battles were fought with the Excise men. You can walk along the Royal Military Canal as it crosses the Marsh from Rye to Hythe, it was built to stop a possible Napoleonic invasion.

Take the road to the sea and you can go south to Dungeness Head, or north along St Mary's Bay, both routes have large beaches to explore and places to visit.
