Sandwich, is the oldest Cinque Port, appointed by Henry VIII as a 'you can raise taxes in exchange for giving me ships' deal.
Now two miles inland due the silting in the River Stour, Sandwichis a small quiet town with lots of old buildings including the medieval Barbican and Fishgate (1384), as well as the St Bartholomews Hospital, 15th century, and 16th century timbered Guildhall and Manwood Court.
The gap between the town and the sea is site of the famous Sandwich Golf Course and two others.
Sandwich Bay, approached by a toll road, has miles of beaches.
