Blackburn

BlackburnBlackburn, a town with its roots in the Industrial Revolution on the edge of the Ribble valley.

Textiles have been produced in this town since Flemish weavers settled here in the 1400's, developing a wool and cotton tradition. James Hargreaves, inventor of the spinning jenny, was a weaver here. Also has a history of brewing, but sadly only one brewer remains.

Its history is reflected in its buildings and market, yet surprisingly close to open moors and countryside. Its cathedral was originally a parish church, rebuilt in the 19th century and enlarged in the 20th.

Made famous as featured in a Beatles song by John Lennon.

Tourist Information Centre.

The town is the home of Blackburn Rovers football club, who play at Ewood Park. There is a cinema, indoor karting, and an ice rink, as well as leisure centres and King Georges Hall for live acts.

Large indoor market in the Market Hall.
