Kensal Green was opened in 1833
as the first commercial graveyard.
Set up at the top of Ladbroke
Grove, the vast, beautiful cemetery is well worth a trip just
to admire its splendid Victorian monuments.
There was a choice of burial
place - outside in the graveyard or in the great catacomb
beneath the chapel. Coffins were lowered in the sub-terranean
vaults by means of a mechanical catafalque, which has recently
been restored to working order.
However, the catacomb was the
burial place of only the very rich.
Kensal Green Cemetery is the
tranquil resting place of many famous Londoners including
Isambard Kingdom Brunel, William Makepeace Thackeray and Anthony
Trollope.
