This fascinating building stands
in Brick Lane, once a lane running through brickfields.
Now a mosque, the building has had a long history as a religious
site.
The building dates from 1743,
when it was erected as a chapel for Huguenots, French Protestant
refugees, who fled to England in the 16th and 17th centuries.
In the 19th century the building
became a synagogue but in the early-20th century was used
as a Methodist chapel.
Today the building is a place
of worship for local Muslims. A sundial, set above the
entrance, has a Latin inscription, 'Umbra Samus' (we are shadows).
