St-Dunstan-in-the-West
dates from the 13th century but the present Gothic-revival
church was built in 1831 - 33. At
that time the widening of Fleet
Street meant that the church had to be rebuilt
slightly to the north.
St Dunstan's main feature is
its curious clock.
Dating
from the 17th century, this unusual timepiece was erected
by the parishioners of St Dunstan after the Great Fire of
1666, as a token of thanks for surviving the fire, along with
their church. Two muscular figures, adorned with gold
loincloths, wield clubs to strike a gong every 15 minutes.
No one is really sure who these
figures are supposed to represent but they may be Gog and
Magog, the legendary giants of the City.
On the outside of the church
is a memorial to Lord Northcliffe, founder of the Daily Mail.
